Minnesota is a great place to be outdoors. We typically start the new year by having a retreat in the University's forest station in Itasca State Park (Lake Itasca is the headwaters of the Mississippi River). Cross-country skiing and snow-football are regular events (ice fishing is yet to be explored, however). Pizza, ice cream socials and bowling are interludes to barbeques in Wei-Shou's backyard in the summer.

Conference presentations and Collaborations

We're a very mobile bunch! On campus, we move back and forth among our collaborators' laboratories in St. Paul, and off campus travel to our collaborators' labs in Nevada, Singapore and Japan. We attend many conferences and teach an industry-geared course in the summer. In Summer 2002, students from our group (R.A., Marcela, Shen, Gargi, Katie) went to work with our collaborators at the University of Nevada, Reno, to build expertise in the field of genomics. In December of 2002, Katie and Gargi went to the National University of Singapore to further our collaborative efforts on the Genomics and Proteomics front with the Biotechnology Centre. During the same time, Pat went on a National Institute of Health-sponsored trip to Japan to visit the Nara Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (NAIST).
