Cell Culture Technology Marching on in India

The University of MN's Chemical Engineering and Materials Sciene department has had many outstanding students from India. Many of whom have returned to their home country, especially in the past few years. One of our alumni, Dr. Sarika Mehra, organized the Cell Culture Technology short course at IIT Bombay in January, 2007. Prof. Wei-Shou Hu and many of his former students, Mugdha (PhD, 2004), Chetan Gadgil (PhD, 2002), both currently at the National Chemical Laboratory, Pune, RA Narayanan (PhD, 2003), currently at Customised Technologies (P) Ltd., Bangalore, Gargi Seth (PhD, 2006), currently at Genentech, South San Francisco, and current Ph.D. student, Salim Charaniya, all participated in organizing or teaching this three day course. Biotechnology is at an unstoppable crescendo in India. The course attracted participants from major players in the Indian biotech industry and was a success in every measure. The offering of this course is an example of utilizing our alumni’s strength to extend our reach in a bourgeoning country.
