Laser Turbidity Probe

Cell concentration can be estimated on-line using a sterilizable laser turbidity probe. The probe is a single-beam sensor whose response is proportional to the absorbed light. Since cell growth has been reported almost exclusively in terms of cell numbers, the total cell number is correlated to the sensor signal. A good correlation between the off-line cell counts and the linearized sensor signal was found. On-line estimates of cell concentration also are good bases for the estimation of specific rates on-line.
